"The nature and being of God is the foundation of all true religion and religious worship in the world.
The great end for which we were made, is to worship and glorify God; and that which renders this worship our dispensable duty is the nature and being of God Himself.
There are indeed some acts of worship which chiefly respect what God is to us, or what He has done for us; but the principal reason for all divine worship ... is God in Himself. Because He is; - because He is an infinitely glorious, good, wise, holy, powerful, righteous, loving, all-sufficient Being. The First Cause and Last End, and sovereign Lord of all; - therefore He is to be worshipped. Therefore we are to adore and love Him, to praise, trust, and fear Him."
John Owen, The Holy Spirit
Of which the converse is true. God has no debts to us, no "indispensable duty" against us. "In the beginning, God." (Gen 1: 1) For eternity past God was utterly self-sufficient and not lacking in anything. Creation, the revelation of God in His Word and through His Son's death and resurrection has not added an iota to His glory, nor has it been brought about by an incomplete God who needed to do these things. God has simply chosen out of sheer and pure grace to manifest what He already was and forever will be; "blessed God over all."
